About Castlewood Academy
Castlewood Academy was founded in 1882 by Cornelius VanDyne, a successful farmer and rancher, in an attempt to share his curiosity and love for the natural world with this northeast corner of South Dakota. The original school building, referred to by many current students as simply "Central," still stands amongst the academy's state-of-the-art facilities in proud testament to our past.
Castlewood Academy strives to help its students reach their full potential. Our scholars are expected not only to pursue rigorous academic standards; they are also required to participate in at least two, varied extra -curricular activities to help them become well-rounded individuals: each student must participate in one athletic extra-curricular activity and one arts/humanities extra-curricular.
Our school also has a strong history of environmental engagement. This year, our campus became the first GREEN Certified campus in the state. We are proud of our agrarian setting and history, and we work to ensure that our students become not only productive, positive members of their communities, but also good stewards.
