Eighth Graders begin the academic year focusing on the nuts and bolts of the English Language: grammar. Through the study of the parts of speech, syntax, and etymology, students not only further understand and take ownership of their own language; they set a solid foundation for the study of other languages.
Next, Eighth Graders focus on using language to communicate effectively: first through letter writing, then through expository writing, and then, finally, through researching and defending a well-articulated and educated point-of-view. In the second half of the year, Eighth Graders focus on the study of literature, examining the nature and function of narrative, fiction, and poetry in contemporary society as well as in history. |
