2015 Artist in ResidencePoetry Workshop Assignment
My name is Lawrence Diggs, sometimes known as the Vinegar Man. I live in Roslyn SD. I am a published poet and artist who coaches poetry, sometimes in the state prison. You can learn more about me at www.vinegarman.com or www.LDiggs.com or www.DiggsArt.com.You can also check out my YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCojZ8C2qzKydMA2tge-Sk2g. I hope to have some fun showing you how you might express yourself with poetry. My goal is to help each of you write a poem that has meaning to you and collectively self publish a book of that poetry, with art. We have only four days. If we are going to create a book that you can be proud to show your grand parents and your grand kids, we will need to “git wit it”. Here are a few things I need you to do before I show up. It will help you discover how expressive and liberating poetry can be. Go to this website http://www.poetrysoup.com/types_of_poems/ Browse through the many kinds of poetry on the website to discover a few styles that appeal to you. Pick a kind of poetry to describe to the class, in your own words, on the first day. Make sure you pick one that no one else picks. Discuss it with classmates to make sure. Be ready to read a short example of that style. Using the examples from the website is OK, but print it out and practice putting your style to it. Start thinking about something you want to say. It can be a feeling. It can be an observation. It can be a question. Maybe it’s something you think is important but you think no one else cares about. It can be anything you would like to say. We are going to help you write a poem to express that, if you need help. Think of a photo, picture or piece of art you can create, or have already created, that can support your poem. Let’s make it a beautiful and colorful book. We will talk more about this on the first day. Let’s have some fun. Lawrence |
